Every time you pick up a newspaper or magazine, turn on the radio or TV, you learn something about “sustainability” or “carbon footprint” or “energy efficiency.” But what does this mean to you? Do these terms even apply?
Conserving energy and making the most of what we already have are really what “going green” is all about. Every time we turn on our heaters or air conditioners, buy bottled water or clean our homes, we are making an impression – good or bad – on our environment. Because the City of North Little Rock is already working to improve the ways it manages energy, money and resources, it decided to take this one step further and form a group to research and develop ideas for everyone in the city to use.
The North Little Rock Green Agenda Committee, which is made up of North Little Rock residents and City and local business officials, was formed after the skyrocketing fuel prices in 2008. While fuel prices are at a much more manageable level, it was apparent there are many people in North Little Rock who have ideas about saving energy, and many more who need energy efficiency information. The Committee explores ideas to reduce energy, save money and limit the amount of emissions released into our air, water and earth. Our focus is on communicating this information and encouraging people of all ages to take the steps needed to reduce our community’s impact on the environment.

Sweat a little: air conditioning can decrease your car’s fuel efficiency by as much as 12 percent in stop-and-go traffic. Crack your windows: at high speeds, driving with the windows open can decrease the overall efficiency of the vehicle. Roll up the windows and use the vents to get a good air flow. Even on the hottest days, keep your AC on low. At higher speeds, you can use the vents to get a good air flow, and on the hottest days keep your AC on low.
Always try to park in the shade. If a tree isn’t nearby, use a windshield shade to keep summer heat out of your car and help keep frost away in the winter.
Avoid making a trip every time you need an item from the grocery store. Buy in bulk and plan your menus ahead of time instead of at the last minute.
